To those who blame the media, that is no excuse for ignorance. As a matter of fact, Africa is a CONTINENT, the second largest and has 53 countries which are very diverse. Rant over! Again, i stress that it is just some who do this, not all

Because alot of people are ignorant. I would blame it on their schooling but even my nine year old nephew knows that. Probably the same reason why people moan about asylum seekers when in fact they know nothing about the subject.

Some people are just uneducated. Try to not let this bug you, instead be patient and educate. I happen to be among the educated, so not only do I know Africa is a continent, but I also know that South Africa is a country in that Continent! I could name more countries that are part of the content of Africa, but then some may think I'm a show-off, so I'll leave it there.

Because they are stupid and ignorant.

Because the African countries were made up by Europeans rather than exsisting naturally (this is true of much of the World if not all of it).

Because Africa is a collection of tribes more than countries.

Because Africa is shafted daily by western countries and no one has any real respect for it.

Pretty sad considering Africa is probably the birth place of humanity and should be the richest most powerful continent on the planet.

People are generally ignorant. But many times people refer to Africa as a region when discussing the problems there. Many of those countries have the same problems-- odd that a continent that big with so many natural resources would be so problematic.

Ignorance is rampant, but it's most scary when it's among the war mongers.

A prominent, pro-war U.S. Senator actually claimed to know little about the difference between Shi'ites and Sunnis in Iraq.

Kinda like if England invaded 1860s USA and its leaders didn't understand the difference between a Northerners and a Southerner.

because the people who think that is the case are uneducated or don't know their geography very well. ever since i was young, i learnt that africa was a continent, in the same way as asia, americas, europe etc are and were. then again there are a lot of people outside of britain who think britain is one massive country when in truth it is made up of england, scotland, wales and northern ireland

Been to Africa several times to different countries. The Africans themselves refer to being African first then a national second.

Africa?
Is that past Spain where the elephants live?

I know what you mean, the same people probably think that Europe is all one country too. (Its the big bit near France)

The thing I find hard to believe is that people don't consider China as part of Asia or Russia as part of Europe.
