Unfortunately, monitors are the one device that you really can't buy on specs alone. You really need to visit a computer store, to view the appearance, side by side with other models. You'd be surprised how often monitors with the same contrast ratio might render colors differently- some just LOOK better than others.
If you aren't interested in gaming or watching movies, then you don't need to be overly concerned with refresh times. In your case, 8ms isn't necessary, you'll be fine with 12-16ms for regular usage (web surfing, e-mail, photos, word processing etc)
I definitely recommend looking at wide-screen monitors, like the Viewsonic VX2025wm or Dell 2007WFP. The extra desktop space comes in VERY handy, makes switching between different windows a breeze. Much nicer than the older format.
Don't be scared off by the big numbers- 20.1" is actually about ideal size- since the measurement is diagonal, it's basically an extra-wide 17" screen.

Iiyama have good quality cheap ones.

this web site will give you a really broad range that you can choose from.
If you aren't bothred about games then you don't really have to worry about the "ms" which is the amount of milliseconds it takes to totally refresh the screen.
The lower the "ms" (mine is 8) the better quality but usually the higher the price.
You can go as low as 2ms but they are expensive and usually only games and movie watchers would benifit.
May I recommend the following monitor (assuming when you say llarger format you mean around 19"):

Be careful because on the back of your hard drive there is a "D" connection which might mean that your computer will not work with digital but only analogue. A Digitlal/Analogue will have 4 pins seperated form the rest if you look carefully, so check your computer manual.

There are a few things you'd be interested in looking at in regards to the monitor itself.
