Steam cleaning is probably one of the best ways to clean your carpet. It should cause no damage to the carpet at all.

Have a great day!!!

I shouldn't say this. Think about what happens when you clean your carpet. The pad under the carpet gets wet. There is no way to dry it except time. How much air gets to the padding? Not much. There is no way you can pull out all the dirt and water from your carpet.

All of that makes me think of mold and mildew........If I were going to clean carpet I would have it done by professionals. They are not much better, but they can perform a better job than the normal person.

It took me four years to complete but I finally have all the carpet/padding in my house changed to different flooring. I don't care how much you pay for carpet/padding, it all gets wet when it is cleaned...................My home is easier to clean and is much fresher.

Steam cleaning does remove the coating that carpets have - particularly the ScotchGard. In addition, it contributes to slowly untwisting the strands and reduces crush resistance. Carpet is fiber just like clothing and wears out. Average lifespan on carpet is 7 years, although some better grades (Mohawk in particular) have longer crush and stain warranties.

But cleaning is inevitable. It has to be done.

A steam cleaner is a very good way to clean your carpet, it will look like new when you have completed your task. However, you will loose your scotchguard. There is no way to clean carpet and not loose your scotchguard. Some cleaners have scotchgurad right in the soap.

Good luck.

You shouldn't do it more than once a year. My hubby used to install carpet so I know a little about flooring! Vac um frequently though!

Don't do it if the carpet has been scotchguarded! That's what I did, what a mistake!
