3/4 of my entended and immediate family live in Florida and so to see them I have taken Southwest Air. March of 05, we had wind sheer, with gusts in excess of 65 mph. About and hour into the flight from Orlando to MacArthur Airport on Long Island NY we experienced what started as severe turbulence, went to total lift characteristic failure and a plunge of say 5-10k before the pilot was able to recover, had to touch-and-go landing and taking off again (because of the severe sheer-crosswind he has to come in faster than normal to maintain lift). At this point the pilot says we dont have enough gas to try landing anywhere else so he is forced to try and land here. He did and let me just say:
1) A school teacher told her rowdy kids to bow their heads and pray when the plane was plunging. You could have heard a pin drop if not for the noise of the engines.
2) The pilot couldnt look the passengers in the eye when exiting the aircraft.

A near death experience. How do I overcome?

I would say just give it time for your body to release the fear.

I was riding a motorcycyle one night and hit a moose. I had a lot of internal injuries and almost died.

When I started riding again, I was literally shaking with fear for several hours. After a while, the shaking stopped, and my fear went away.

Wow, coming from someone who isn't particularly fond of flying, I feel for you! I would have been terrified in your situation.

I think what you have to remind yourself of though, is the sheer numbers of people who take airplanes every single day without incident. Think of all the flights in progress at this very moment that will arrive at their destinations just fine. I think if you let the fear of what happened on this flight envelope you, you can pretty much consider yourself grounded for the rest of your life. If you think you can live with that, fine. If not, you need to just white knuckle it and just get back on a plane. After what you've been through, I'd say the chances of something serious happening to you in the future during a flight are very, very low.

What I don't understand though, is why couldn't the pilot look the passengers in the eye when exiting the aircraft? A pilot has no control over weather conditions. I would think, if anything, the passengers on that flight would have been thanking the pilot for landing the plane safely. Even so, I'm having a difficult time believing a pilot would actually advise his or her passengers of a fuel shortage situation, especially in an emergency.

Time is a great healer. Maybe do some research on the statistics of in-flight airplane incidents. Everything happens for a reason - even the things we don't and/or can't understand.

That was a scary experience I'm sure. I've thankfully never had an encounter like that of my many flights. My suggestion to you would be to have a few drinks before the flight or to take a mood relaxing medication prior to. You would have to speak to your doctor about the second. Also, just think to yourself that if you made it through the first flight the next will be 100% better.

Keep flying in airplanes to re-asure yourself that there is nothing to worry about that these ppl are professionals, they don't want to die either... although keep in mind we are all human. My brother had a similar, yet not so dramatic exerience and he was never afraid of flying before until now, now he hates planes... but even though he has his fears he still goes on planes because if you get kicked off a spooked horse, if you love riding you will ride again, or you choke on food are you never gonna eat again? Have faith and you should not be dissapointed. Good Luck! :)

I uncover plenty of of very unusual matters approximately your tale that leads me to considering you're exagerating a quality deal of it. The pilot of a industrial aircraft might certainly not say over the loudspeaker that he's low on gasoline. Planes don't use "gasoline". Pilots constantly say "gasoline". They additionally might certainly not announce it to the passengers. If your tale used to be precise, the pilot might have informed the flight attendants to have the passengers get ready for an emergency touchdown via assuming the crash function as proven at the emergency card within the seat wallet. If you rather have psyched your self into believing your possess tale, my recommendation to you is to peer a authentic intellectual wellness guide. They can frequently support a man or woman recover from a phobia like yours. You can be like John Madden and refuse to fly and take the bus or educate. Both busses and trains move to Florida from New York.

Are you afraid to die? If so that's something you have to have peace
with.. Trust in God , faith and prayer would probably help! Maybe taking a train would be a good alternative until you conquer your fear.. You need time.... Ask whoever is in Fl to visit you instead..

They have classes that you can take. Dont let this one experience scare you. You have more of a chance dying in a car crash than a plane crash.
