Almost all fish benefit from a little salt in their water. It helps inhibit bacteria, parasites and helps them keep their slime coating at its' best.
The bacteria should be no different on a saltwater bio-wheel than on a freshwater one. If you are afraid to use it, just make sure you dry it completely out, that will kill any bacteria that are still in it. Then go ahead and use it.
What little salt is left on the gravel will not harm your fish. When I get a new tank either used or new I always wash it out with a paste of salt and a little water on a paper towel. After the rinse, I use it. Like I said, a little salt is OK.
That would be 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons for regular tropicals and 1 teaspoon per gallon for brackish water fish.

i would wash it out a little bit, i don't see it to be a big problem, i usually add some rock salt to my fresh water tank after i change the water anyways, something with the pH i guess, i don't understand it fully, i was taught to do that, i guess it also depends on what fish you getting, some fish are more sensitive than others

any tank you get given should be cleaned out first with special disinfecting stuff for fish tanks plus you will need to take all the gravel out and wash it with water has hot as you can work with then rinse it all properly and you can put it back into tank once you have cleaned it with the disenfecting stuff

Marine tanks use substrate that is high in calcium. Only use it if you plan to keep cichlids. The filter itself is good, but you will need to replace the bio-wheel.
