Let him know you exist,get his attention by dropping something when he is near and just do something anyone would notice and help you out and then ask if you can pay him back with an ice cream after and get to know him!

Just go spark a conversation with him. Say "Hey how are you" Introduce yourself! Live like there is no tommorow or you will regret never getting to know him.
