Of course Shatner is a legend, Pine would have nothing to work from if he hadn't been so great. Chris Pine though is a PERFECT younger Kirk, they couldn't have done a better job, he's brilliant. And I love all the rest of the casting as well - it's a great new cast, all the way down the line, they've got them all down pretty darn well. edit: hehe, glad someone agrees. But just want to put this down, my opinion is that this new series IS the way it was envisioned in the beginning - we finally reached the level of technology where what they portray reflects what should have been had they been able to. I got so excited watching the first film, I just knew this was how it was supposed to be all along, it - everything about it - is just utterly perfect. This is the Starship Enterprise that I wish I was on.

As a replacement for Shatner, Pine was a good choice. But that's pretty much where I draw the line with the new actors. Quinto doesn't make a good Spock. Pegg is dire as Scotty (he plays Simon Pegg in everything he's in), Karl Urban was a great choice as McCoy but he hasn't nailed the character yet. The mannerisms and sayings are too forced. Yeltsin is too Wesleyish - young kid saves the ship again kind of thing. Saldana is ok as Uhura but that Spock/Uhura romance is a joke. I do like Chow as Sulu though. From my perspective, having grown up watching the Original series, nuTrek is an absolute travesty. It's lost the heart and soul that makes Trek what it is. It's illogical and shallow and badly written by people who don't understand Trek (by their own admission). What we got with the new movies is Star Wars set in the Star Trek universe and angsty twenty somethings on the Apple iEnterprise. Utterly woeful reimagining.
