its on the south side of the 10 freeway, about 20 miles outside of phoneix. anybody know what kind of track this was?

Do you mean coming into town from Tucson? The one near the casino at wild horse pass over by the new Rawhide? That is Firebird International Raceway.

There is also a race track out on the West side of town that I think does mostly funny car stuff. Manzanita Speedway.

Where are you coming from? South of Tempe/Chandler on I-10 is Firebird. Turf paradise is off of I-17, I think. And PIR is in Avondale but nowhere near I-10.
I say fiebird. And was? They still use it. For what I don't know.
