Your all WRONG!
winter buttons are little release buttons that use to come with mittens.
The mittens would clip on to the childs sleeve so they wouldn't lose them.
Since wearing mittens made it difficult to press the little release, J.P. Penny's company in 1896 came out with a large decorative release botton.
Since they were only seen in winter, they were nicknamed, "winter buttons"
