Many founding fathers were deists. They believed in the use of reason and rejected supernatural explanations in favor of scientific methods of discovery. This does not mean they did not believe in god, only that they saw him as the "Great Clockmaker" who set creation in motion and then stepped back to watch without interfering.

Put simply, they were all Protestants, without exception. I'd say they were Liberal Protestants, in today's religious lingo. They may have been Anglicans. They certainly were not Catholic or Fundamentalist Christian I know that.

Officially they would have been Anglican (Episcopalian), but most were not religious and would have consdidered themselves Deists.
