I read all the answers above mine. I thought some were O.K. BUT I discovered long ago (because I am old) that when you use these things to freshen your air, you are only masking the odors.
If you are sure you want your home to smell "fresh" and not like perfume you have to work for it. It takes more than a plug in or a can of spray. Candles turn your walls and ceilings black if you don't keep the wicks clipped close to the candle. Insense is not good for the children to smell. It's not healthy for them!!
Here is the secret: Open windows as often as the weather permits and air your house out. There is nothing better than fresh air. Clean your house weekly. That means using a cleaner such as Lestoil, Mr. Clean, something like that. Scrub everything that doesn't move. Dust your furniture, vacuum every room, never
leave dirty dishes sitting. Never leave dirty laundry laying around the house. It all comes down to being very clean.
I keep a waste basket in every room and dump them every other day. Everyone should have a laundry basket available. Change sheets weekly. Scour all your sinks and toilets. If you do these things weekly you will have a "fresh" odor every time you walk in
your door............If you get into a maintenance cleaning plan in your home it doesn't seem so devastating......Include the children
in the cleaning. They won't like it but they should have chores to do. They will thank you later...........
I can only imagine you saying, "I don't have time to do all this crap. This old lady is nuts. Where is the Fabreze?"

Making a house smell fresh? Here are a few tips that I can remember my mother doing when we moved into a new house. 1) Depending on the carpet's condition, taking baking soda and spreading out all over allowing it to sit for 24 hours then getting it all up by shampooing rather than vacuum. If the carpet is real old....new carpet is the better solution. 2) Washing down all the wall with "Pine Sol" solutions. If the old owners were smokers, I'm sure the walls have absorbed a lot of smoke over the years. 3) Any wood in the house?? Break out the polishing OILS not just the spray, but the oils!! The oil will penetrate deep into the wood for a longer soaking of fresh smell. 4) Check the A/C ducts to see if they are clean. and finally..my favorite.... 5) There are some great scented candles from Bath & Bodyworks, Yankee Candles and/or Wicks & sticks. A long shot place for some real great candles would be Walgreens.....yes....Walgreens. I was in that store about 2 weeks ago and they had the "knock off" versions of Yankee Candles and DAM ARE THEY GOOD!!! Hope it helps! Good luck!

Febreeze! It's the best stuff. It takes out all odors (including cigarette smoke). Spray it thoroughly directly on furniture, curtains, bedding, even carpets. Those are the things that hold the stale smells. Spraying air fresheners only freshen the air for a few minutes until it dissipates and dries. But febreeze makes the whole place smell fresh for hours, even days. I use it ALL the time.

Besides candles and air freshener, I stuff 'dryer sheets' under and in and around furniture. Some of those things smell sooo good, and it freshens the room.
You can put them over the cold air return filter, too. Only one - so as not to impede the air. I even rub them on the backs and arms of the furniture. Nice smell.
Also work great in a car that is all stuffy smelling.

I'm working with a Fortune 500 company that sells products, such as an air purifyer/sanitizer that makes my own house smell as if a rainstorm has just gone through it. Check the website for EcoQuest and review their material. I think you might find that of interest.

Okay, this is going to sound really weird but it works so good. Get some liquid laundry softener mix 2 parts water 1part softener. Put it in a small sauce pan and place on the back burner on your stove and let simmer. Or get a potpourri burner. I recommend suavitel.

I use a Lamberge lamp to sanitize the air and add freshness. There are many scents to choose from. I would stay away from spraying carpets or furniture with any chemical like Frebreeze. Any sprayed chemical will attract dirt, grab it and, eventually will build-up and look dirty.

I found these new air freshners, reed diffusers I believe are what they are called. I got mine at pier imports. It is a glass jar with sticks sticking out, The jar has some type of fragant oil in it that absorbs into the sticks. It comes in alot of different fragrances. The one I got is high sierra, I have it in my office & it always smells great.

Get all your carpets and upholstery steam cleaned. Wash all your curtains, trash cans, anything that needs it. Then you could pick up a bunch of those air fresheners that plug in or Febreeze scent stories.
