If you have a health question or concern, is it acceptable for someone to call their doctor at the office without making an appointment? Will they talk to you? Is it considered rude? Does the same apply to specialists?

In almost every phone book there is a section in the yellow pages that has a service called "Ask a Nurse" that you can call. Calling your doctor for advice will usually get you routed right to a nurse in his/her office. It's not rude to call your doctor, however, it is not likely that they would personally take your call. Ask A Nurse is very reliable.

Usually there is a triage nurse or medical assistant that will answer questions for you. They may have to return a call because they're pretty busy. Based on your question, they sometimes still want you to make an appointment to have things checked out.

Of course you can. Just ask to either speak to your doctor or the nurse. If the nurse can't answer your question, he or she will have the doctor call you back.

More than likely a nurse will take the call first and determine if you should come in or if a call from the doctor will suffice.

I see no reason why not. But as someone above said, it depends on your doctor.

Of course, you could always ring them and ask (badum!)

no? not funny? ok
