There are several options to choose from in Jamaica. I would recommend Negril or Ocho Rios depending on your expectations because both of these cities are quite different.
In Jamaica you fly into Montego Bay and the road to Ocho Rios is currently being worked on so it takes about 2 hours to get there (the road could be completed once you go though in March or April).
Ocho Rios has some decent beaches. See in Ocho Rios the Mountains push towards the ocean so many of the resorts are kind of cove like and can be more secluded depending on the property you stay at. I'm assuming you meant you and your girlfriend as in only the two of you =) There are several couple’s properties that would be good choices. There are less expensive options over the Sandals resorts, but are still very great properties. See with Jamaica you just don't want to go to inexpensive or you will not enjoy your time there. On the opposite note though you don't have to stay in the most expensive.
Negril is known for Beaches and Sunsets. In fact it has some of the nicest beaches in the world there. Negrils drive from Montego Bay is about an hour which can vary with traffic. Negril also have some very good choices for couple properties.
The middle of March - Middle of April is Spring break travel so rates will be higher during this time of the year. We could look at a few date options that price best once the resort is determined.
When I went to Jamaica I absolutely loved it and they are the 2nd top honeymoon destination so they must be doing something right!
I would check out www.couples.com these resorts are a good choice that are nice, but not over the top like some of them are price wise. I would be able to help you in arranging airfare/hotel stay/transfers/taxes in the same package. Doing it as a package also you will always get better airfare prices as opposed to booking separately.
I would be happy to help you in the planning of this very special 50th Birthday! Jamaica is definately a great choice. Flights not to long and they have some of the nicests resorts in the Caribbean at an affordable price. Feel free to email me and I can give you my contact information.

Happy birthday early!! My wife and I went to Jamaica this past July and I turned 50 there. Another lady we met at our resort turned 50 the day after I. We both had fantastic birthdays! Our resort was Breezes Runaway Bay and we were thrilled with it. Also, it is now closed and is being remodeled. It will re-open in December. I recommend it. Check out TripAdvisor.com for reviews on specific resorts. Also look for the forums section which is a question and answer (like here.) I would suggest you consider what it is you want in a resort. Some cater to children, others are adults only (Breezes was 14 and over.) Some have relaxation as the main goal while others have a party atmosphere (Breezes did). Some have great beaches while others don't. Think about what you want in a resort and go from there. Have a great trip!!

For my money, the best place to stay is Sandals in Negril. Of course I am a man and I like the fact that of the 5 Sandals in Jamaica, this one site is clothing optional. But it may or may not work for you and your friends. But I am 58 and I love this place. Have a good trip, whatever you decide. Just don't go into the mountains.

The vacation you want will depend on so much more then this question ask. What you want from your vacation is very important. If it is just hangout on the beach reading a book most of the time there are LOTS of places. If your going to want to spend money and do tours every day then you will want to stay as close to most of them as you can. (Ocho) If your view is a resort where you stay and it has a disco, a number of places to eat, swim up bar as well as walk up ones and putt putt golf and a piano bar then Negril (Hedonism) if your wanting to walk the street and walk into shops set up for tourist (Montego Bay) So much more to think about. We use the two travel agents listed below they can help you a lot so you spend your money making a great vacation.

First of all......Happy early birthday
I have read some of your answers and they all look good except that Sandals are for traditional couples only so you would have to look towards something thats geared for large groups. I can give you ideals on whats fun for that time of year. Try the Martha brea water rafting, its a relaxing ride on the river with wonderful tour guides.
Try the glimmering waters at lagoon beach, this is great!!!! and you can swim in the waters!!! Go to the world largest party at Chukka Cove (St. Ann's-Jamaican Carnival)
Be prepared to dance your legs off!!! Usually held close to easter, just check for dates.
Dunns river falls is a must for all travelers !!! Have lots of fun and take many pictures

My wife and I went to the Sandals White house in Whitehouse, Jamaica. It was all inclusive, and awesome. It's technically a couples only resort, which basically means no kids.

My wife and I always stay at Montego Bay, at an exclusive and all-inclusive resort.
One time, we left our resort to explore. Our favorite beach was in Negril... beautiful sand and water, but too many peddlers and everyone expected a tip. Now we don't have to leave our resort anymore.

Did you say girlfriends??? As in more than one??? Erm, ok. I would suggest Ocho Rios is the best place to go. They have a Sandals Resort which is all inclusive.

I recommend Negril; I will be going there in January for the fifth time.
Negril is very laid back, relaxed, easy going. The beaches are white sand, very flat, and the water is calm and blue. There are two Riu resorts in Negril (www.riu.com); they are all inclusive and by far the best resorts there.

Ocho Rios is nice, but make sure you go to an all inclusive hotel and try not to go out too late alone.........be sure to visit the famous water fall and if you can you should take their horseback riding through the ocean, it is wonderful.
