North Korea has a standing army of roughly 2 Million soldiers and literally thousands of artillery pieces within range of Seoul. While the US could decimate the country with superior air and naval power, the catastrophic loss to a US ally, South Korea, would be horrendous. Couple that with possible political fall out with China and/or Russia, and you have the reason why the US isn't considering military options at this time.
Now, should North Korea be crazy enough to attempt a preemptive nuclear strike, the US would return the favor in kind, making North Korea a radioactive wasteland.

Probably because the leader there is a lunatic and would set off nuclear weapons on Japan without even thinking twice. If the US wiped out N. Korea, then I suppose China would feel obligated to go to war with US.
I think the US policy of not assassinating crazy leaders is wrong, why wait until the world is at the brink of a holocaust, Easy enough to get these guys when we see the way the cards are going. I.E. Hitler 1936. How different would the world be?

Well, for one thing it would probably lead to World War III. China would never sit still for any action and in 1950 they (China) almost kicked our ***. This time they have nukes, and would definitely strike Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Even if China didn't get involved North Korea would strike these same targets along with invading South Korea. They were and are a tough foe and as before quickly overrun both the South Koreans and the United State forces. God bless you and the Southern People.

Not that I'm an expert, but I think there are many factors to the U.S. reluctance to the military option for North Korea. 1. The U.S. military is spread pretty thin already. 2. There seems to be plenty of tension and terror around the world, (most of it caused by the U.S.). 3. A small matter of hypocrisy and double standards. As I understand it the nuclear non-proliferation treaty signed by Reagan proposed that no new nations would gain access to nuclear weapons or nuclear weapons technologies while those countries that already had nukes would cease production and begin disarming and disposing of their massive stockpiles. The U.S. is currently honoring half of that treaty. Can you guess which half.

south korea has form of 8 cases the protection stress stress of north korea, south korea also has the quite a few proper marine technologies contained in the total international. any warfare will be over in probable a count of 40 8 hours, seeing as how the only component n. korea has over s. korea has is form of infantry, and they'd opt for to head by the dmz it truly is absolute suicide. s. korea does worry n. korea as does japan for its nuclear arsenal and missile skill it truly is allegedly waiting to attack the important cities of s. korea and japan, yet i do no longer have self belief that s. korea is "scared" of n. korea highly with this administration which has a fairly good stance of "anti-north." s. korea has a large surplus of grain each 12 months which regularly is going to waste... actually thrown away. The korean sense of nationwide unity is significantly better than many foreigners imagine. it really is uncommon to stumble on any korean who would not sense that the north koreans are kin. Even united statesa.'s embargos are directed hostile to persons interior of North Korean society who might want to teach their displeasure with the embargo and direct that discontent to Kim Jong Il. South Korea is only attempting to feed the North. They already do no longer have adequate gas to proceed with their protection stress preparation.

bullys? no. more like emo's in desperate need of attention. with dubya in office, military action is ALWAYS an option. strategically no korea is isolated. china are sort of our allies and japan will definitely have no problems launching their own offensive against them. were the n koreans to use nuclear arms, it would horrific for whoever was the target, and also a death sentence for them as well. yes they have a large army but you have to keep in mind their neighbors and surrounding area too. s korea, japan, maybe china and definitely the US, and most likely the UN would all intervene. there is no way the n korean army can stop all of them. and using nuclear weapons at all is grounds for an all out war. a war in which kim jong il will never win. It's more likely the case that lil kim just wants some attention. he'd be really stupid to think he can win a war using nuclear arms. unless he were to unleash mass amounts of them then maybe, but before that time comes, he would be hunted down by lots and lots of people.

I don't know, I didn't hear that, but all I can say is what goes around, comes around. For at least the past ten years or so, I've been noticing how other countries view the U.S.. We are viewed as bullies. What makes US think we have the right to be the only superpower on the planet?
And isn't the only way to resolve our differences is to at least TALK about them?

Because they have threatened to burn Seoul to the ground if the North is attacked. North Korea has enough rockets and artillery (and at least a couple of nuclear bombs), so it is possible that North Korea could destroy the capitol of the South even if the North eventually loses.

my opinion is this chancer-don't interfere. if they want nuclear weapons then let them have them they will produce them whether the west likes it or not anyway. but if i was blair i would say to the north korean president-we have no argument with you and i hope you have none with the UK-but point those at us and we will fire first!!!-if all the UN countries adopted this attitude the threat of nuclear war would be virtually eliminated. its the same as the local troublemaker on every estate in the world-let him do what he wants but let it be known that if he bothers you then you will destroy him-you will get left alone trust me and if all the other neighbours do the same all he will do is crawl back down his hole. same with korea.

Military action is only ever an option when the USA Government knows that the country in question is much weaker than the USA. It doesn't mess with Russia or China, for example.
