The Earth's shape is very close to an oblate spheroid, although the precise shape (the geoid) varies from this by up to 100 meters (330 ft). The average diameter of the reference spheroid is approximately 12,742 km (~ 40,000 km / π). The rotation of the Earth causes the equator to bulge out slightly so that the equatorial diameter is 43 km larger than the pole to pole diameter. The largest local deviations in the rocky surface of the Earth are Mount Everest (8,850 m above local sea level) and the Mariana Trench (10,924 m below local sea level). Hence compared to a perfect ellipsoid, the Earth has a tolerance of about one part in about 584, or 0.17%. For comparison, this is less than the 0.22% tolerance allowed in billiard balls. Because of the bulge, the feature farthest from the center of the Earth is actually Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador.
Did you know that it was believed that the Earth was the centre of the Universe & that those who said otherwise were often killed by the RC Church?

Hastings is the only town in England to have had an English,French and American flag raised in a serious act of defiance. The English one for obvious reasons, the French (or Norman) one by William the Conqueror and the American one in defence of the America Ground. A truly earth shattering fact. Well,it is to us in Hastings!

I like the theory of Pangea which hypothesizes that the continents used to be connected. Notice how the western side of Africa kind of fits against the eastern side of South America?

The Earth is not actually a sphere. It is a little wider below the equator than above it. That is called a prolate spheroid.

Yes, the Earth is going to be conquered by evil squirrels some time in the not so distant future. They will force the human race to work in their nut mines.
