Having an abortion is a legal right in the UK, and it's one that should be made by both parents with the full support of counsellors.

If the baby is going to be born with an impairment, then the parents really do need to decide early on whether or not to go ahead with the pregnancy.

I fully support abortion, but feel that unless both lives are at risk there must be a cut off point, after which the law needs to say, it's too late.

Having a termination because the baby might have an impairment is potentially morally wrong, however, some parents will not cope with a child with additional needs and they need to discuss the options.

I would say that 20 - 24 weeks should be the maximum limit.

A person with Downs Syndrome can have a good quality of life especially if they with a family that loves them. Most people abort babies that are Down Syndrome as they are the ones that have the issues with raising a child with a disability.

The problem is that Down's syndrome covers a very wide spectrum of disability. As a social worker, I encountered people with Down's who were fully functioning members of society, leading very full and positive lives, as well as people who frankly had very poor life quality and very high dependance.
My sister had a test that suggested her daughter would be born with Down's, but she continued with the pregnancy, and my niece was born 100% healthy.

I would have the child without hesitation. I have one son now with Down syndrome and I cannot imagine life without him. If my next child has Down syndrome, it won't matter a bit. Kids with Down syndrome have so many more opportunities available to them these days to help them reach their full potential. They lead happy, fulfilling, normal lives for the most part. Children with Down syndrome are a little glimpse of Heaven to me.

We had a distant relative with a Downs child and he was quite nice and very happy with life, although he died from natural causes before the age of 30.

Not change a single thing, why does the fcat that your child has downs syndrome affect any choice you make, it is still your child, that never changes nor does the love you should show.

I would have the child, love and cherish it for ever and be proud he/she is my child, in Africa children born with downs syndrome are held in very high esteem and called Tiger children, every child has a right to live and who are we to pick and choose.
