Give the child a test in its own language and get is assessed and then find out where the child will fit in. If necessary have special classes so the child understands what is being said and taught in the class and then upgrade them accordingly. There is nothing worse than being new to a country and not understanding what is going on around you and it is more perplexing for a child though children pic up languages very fast and fit in to society quicker than adults.

Change the way that text books are written? They cater entirely to students who are well versed in the host country culture, leaving other students wafting in the breeze.

As a small example, my friend's daughter came to me for homework help today. She had to write a paragraph on where she would want to go and what she would do there if she won a competition. The only problem? She is Thai and is clueless about places to visit in England. A native aged 8-9 would probably have chosen Alton Towers or some such.

Community liaison services with volunteer workers from large ethnic groups in the schools. they can advise on cultural differences and support the students and their families.

A change in the dynamic of social studies. Stop trying to make out that countries like Britain are multi-cultural. In the truest sense they are not. Celebrate all our diversity , but stop trying to force feed the multi cultural concept to students.

Is that ok for a start?

Depends on the country but my advice is if you're coming to the US or to Canada take English as a Second Language courses taught by an american or canadian before you come. Learn to speak the language as it is spoken ,not from textbooks, learn to read and comprehend what you are reading in english.

Learn about resumes, filling out job applications, ordering in restaurants.

Many school boards offer esl classes for little kids expecting them to teach the parents. However parents need to learn english and not isolate themselves in ethnic neighbourhoods where there are the same customs and languages spoken at home. You do that and it's like you never left you're own country so why would you have an impetus to assimilate into north american society.

That's what my grandparents did when they came from Sweden, they taught themselves english , only spoke a little swedish at home. Yes they kept alot of their customs, but they also integrated Canadian customs into their own too. My mother used to say my gramma would say ve're Canadian now ve act like Canadians not Svedes.

before we look at assessing non-national students abilities to comprehend the language, we need to educate the current/national students to understand and appreciate the customs of other countries.

if anyone in the community could speak their language they might offer to interpret for them, they could be assigned different people to go places with them and help them shop, order food, shop for food............offer to drive them places, I see a lot of the foreign kids here having to walk everywhere.............just see what they need, maybe observe their struggles and then you will notice what they could use
