this really can't be answered unless you were able to put all 3 of them racing together at their prime.
first, obviously richard petty has the best record..however, he also raced when it wasn't as competitive..
dale rached when it was pretty competitive and had a great record..richard petty said that there was a good chance if dale was still driving he could have gotten the 200 win..however, we will never know..and there was a large amount of time in which dale was not so hot on the track..
no jeff has raced during the sports most competitive years, but still has a great record. 4 championships and 6th most amount of all time wins..now too bad. and like i said you have to figure into that equation that he's racing during a waaaaay more competitive time frame than the other two.

so again..the only way you'd really be able to tell is to put all three of them during their prime together, and well that's not possible..sooo... i guess we can just appreciate all 3 of them and their different driving sytles and accomplishments

I am not going to say Dale Earnhardt just to get a plus on this one. I am going to say that Richard Petty was the best driver, followed by Jeff Gordon, then Dale Earnhardt. The question was not about whether or not you liked the guys personality or liked the guy, it is can they drive? Richard proved that he could wheel a race car. 200 wins is enough said! Jeff Gordon has won on nearly every track (Texas, Phoenix, Homestead only ones he hasn't) and has 75 total wins. The thing that I look back to is 1998 Gordon had 13 wins and an average finish of 5.7. That is nearly unheard of in this generation of drivers. No one will win 13 races again. Earnhardt had quite a career, I mean 7 titles, that is just crazy to think about. Earnhardt won at a lot tracks, but most of his wins came at short tracks or restrictor plate racing. Can't deny his talent at all, he is a top three all time for sure.

They all say that Petty is the King.........though I firmly believe that Dale Earnhardt was a MUCH better driver than Petty ever was. There was not the competition and regulations for Petty as there were for Earnhardt and now and driver. Earnhardt was a living legend and will now always be a legend and his name is what helped out Nascar more than Petty. I am forever a fan of the Man In Black.........there will never be another like him.

I say that Richard and Dale Sr are tied. I mean Richard Petty will always be the King no matter what anyone says or what any other driver achieves, there is only one King in Nascar and that is Richard Petty!! The man had 200 wins...nobody will even come close to touching that.

Dale Sr had 76 wins and 7 championships and there are some drivers who can't even get a single win in Nascar!

Come on there are no other choices here, Richard Petty. Of Coarse, 200 Wins, and invented new ways to win all the Time. Why do you think they inspect the cars now-a-days. Richard Petty Crashed at the finish line and still won. He ran out of gas and still won. He did what ever it took to win. His 200 wins will take a very long time to beat. Dale was a great racer though, he would bump people, get them loose just to pass them. The great Intimidater, cars would get out his way if they knew he was faster because if you did not you are getting bumped. He had this great sense of knowing just when to pass. I saw him crash once, and he came back and almost won that race. He was so much fun just to watch him race. Jeff was great, but what has he done since he lost Evernham, and his famous DuPont Crew. Not much!

,Earnhardt and Petty owned their eras. I have never seen anybody drive a car the way Earnhardt did. During his last IROC race at Daytona, Eddie Cheever knocked him into the infield, all four tires were in the grass. He gathered the car back up and rejoined the race only losing two positions. Nobody else could have done that, not even The King. Jeff Gordon doesn't even belong in this question.

Not knocking Gordon's driving but his personality keeps him out of the class of Petty and Earnhardt
Petty and Earnhardt are the best.

the King was the best..he was famous and a household name when NASCAR was nothing....I hated number 3 and think Gordon is great but wont be able to continue as long as Petty did. for people to say Gordon isnt close, are just not being honest b/c of personal feeling, the guy has a lot of wins, and would have had another cup if they didnt change the rules..if you look at the 1st year of the new points system, he won using the old system.

as far as I didnt care for 3, he was a great driver, and reallyy helped make NASCAR as big as it is...I actually admire Jr, b/c of all teh crap he dealt with with the media when Sr died, the media was horrible but he handled it so well
