This is a hard one, if you are referring to a novel, or short story, you could either choose to do a; descriptive opening; an opening in the first person (the main characters' point of view) or a cliffhanger opening.

A descriptive opening would be usefull if you want to set the scene, this would be usefull for a long story, you should refer to the 5 sences (sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch). You should also explain shapes, sizes, colours and any movement going on.

If you choose to do an opening in the first person, you need to put yourself in his/her shoes and try and put your own emotions into it. Describe if you are hot/cold or nervous/excited?

The cliff-hanger opening is the best in my opinion, it gets the reader guessing and it makes them want to read on. For this to work you should keep information and detail to a bare minimum. Short sentances also builds up tension.

I hope this answers your question, sorry if it is not what you are looking for, its just your question seems to be a bit vague. Good luck!

If you mean for an essay, you should say what you are going to do, why you are going to do it, and how you are going to do it. I think!
