People in the northeast are very used to tourists being around, NYC, Boston, all of New England gets tourists from everywhere all the time, I wouldn't worry about it and just enjoy yourself. The people that live in the northeast come off as a little gruff, but they are actually quite nice people and willing to help you out if you have a question, they are just a little more direct than a lot of the rest of the country is used to, and they don't even try to do fake nice at all, so don't expect that and you won't be let down or upset!!! Have fun, it's a great and very cool area!

As far as I can see from people in the "urban Northeast" nobody would be paying attention to what you're doing or what you look like anyway. The only people who may notice would be the people who work in the tourist business, like hotel people or drivers etc., and since they're used to tourists they don't think anything about them either.
I guess as long as you don't wear any farmer hats or cowboy hats you'll blend in.

If we're talking NYC its pretty easy. Lets face it, an accent won't even be looked at twice here.
Dont carry an obvious camera. Dont look up all the time. Dont look around corners as you walk up to them. Jaywalk constantly, dont look at the crosswalk light look at the traffic. If you can make it across, do so but dont run. Walk as if you know where you're going at all times (even if you dont) and with a brisk pace. Dont stare at ppl, even if they look really freaky. Dont take anything handed to you on the street, if they dont want it why do you? Dont read a map or guide book on the street. Learn quickly how to get through the turnstiles into the subway.

Be rude, avoid eye contact and do not talk to anyone. If you are in Boston DO NOT stop for the cars- that will be a dead giveaway- pedestrians in Boston just keep walking- car or no car. If a motorists has the audacity to beep at you, you must flip him off and also hit the hood of his car if it is within reach.

Just learn the area. If you know where you're going, or at least have a good enough idea, and know the names/pronunciation of local cities and sites then you'll be fine. Stopping to ask questions, or seeming overly friendly is usually a give away.

Learn the proper pronouciations of town and city names - don't try to say them with an accent! Don't even attempt a local accent. For example, if you come to Massachusetts and try to pronounce the city named Worcester, you should say "Wuh-ster". The locals pronounce it "Wuh-stah". Don't do that - people will know you are are trying too hard. And of course don't pronounce it "Wor-chest-er" cuz that's just wrong.

Don't carry a map around (or don't let anyone see that you have one). Don't stop in your tracks and crane your head up, looking around like you're lost. Don't wander idly or slowly along. Walk like you know exactly where you're going, and like you have something important to do. Don't wear a sweatshirt w rabbits handpainted on it.
