one of her students multiple times, but we should tar and feather Foley for e-mail and IMs?

I'm not defending his actions, but we need to have a serious overhaul of our system, huh?

My fiance put it like this, she thinks that the teacher getting off is a slap in the face to women's rights and it just continues the stereotype that women are not equal.

Anyone that has sex with a child or makes sexual comments to a child need to be drawn and quartered.

Unfortunately at times the law can be a little easier on females than on males, and while her sentence was 'light', I doubt that she's being let off. Also you have to consider the difference, the adult woman was having sexual relations with a minor male, while the senator was imposing his sexual preference on minor males who may OR MAY NOY have been of the same sexual orientation, so many people will consider that he was the more aggressive.

"Lafave on house arrest for similar Hillsborough County charges, remains her only punishment...Marion County Judge Hale Stancil rejected a plea deal in which Lafave would plead guilty to the Marion County charges in exchange for serving three years of house arrest followed by seven years of probation. The sentence would have been equal to the one she is serving after pleading guilty in Hillsborough County......In addition to the house arrest and probation, Lafave's Hillsborough deal mandates that she register as a sex offender, forfeit her teaching certificate and wear an electronic monitoring device when the court deems necessary. And she cannot have contact with minor children."

Secondly while both our apprehensible, the fact remains that this woman did not do this for years. Foley contends that he only contacted these boys because he was drunk/drinking/alcoholic. LaFave says she's bipolar and it made her do things that she wouldn't normally do. Both are trying to excuse their behavior based on an illness but only LaFave has stated that she realizes she crossed the line. Foley still contends that it was the alcohol (like Flip Wilson's devil) that made him do it. But, evidently he had a history of this behavior as the pages office and other people on the hill were warend about him.

Yes the system needs to be overhauled, and let's start with not letting people off with such flimsy excuses as used in both these cases.

I think we have to decide if this is going to be a political argument or a sexist one?!

I haven't seen any tar or feathers but I assume republicans will view it differently.

As for sexual equality I don't believe that is relevant here.

I whole heartedly agree that we need to re-examine the system and most importantly our penalties but this comes down to positions of power, a teacher vs a politician and what we expect from them on a day to day basis. Also the age of the people involved and their own participation. Now, don't get me wrong teachers are VERY powerful people and they are shaping our youth but government is the highest upstanding position (or supposed to be).
The 14 year old boy was victimized by Lefave and she did indeed receive house arrest for 3 years and 7 years probation, not exactly "let off"

Well, we know why the system went easy on Lafave. But Foley is a child predator also, no matter how you slice it. I didn't agree with Lafave's sentence. She should be in jail. But she's not due to the fact the parents of the boy did not want him to testify in court. Now you know what women victims of rape go through.

If you think about it there's not too much difference. Lafave lost her job and the nine yards, as did Foley. Doesn't look like Foley will be going to jail.

For obvious reasons, women having sex with young boys is different the men having sex with young girls. Further anyone having same sex, sex is worst of all. And of same sex, sex, men and boys is the absolute worst.

Makes sense to me.

Hmm let me see, I think that a law maker and a drunk and a pediphile, still do not make good bed fellows. But what do I know. Hell this government, in the U.S. is full of them. And they don't think anything is wrong here. Excuse me while vomit!!!!!!!!
