When I was in elementary school, I actually read the book before I saw the movie. The movie is based on a novel by Felix Salten, called Bambi, A Life in the Woods.
In the book, it clearly identifies Bambi as a male, especially when he becomes the new prince of the forest.
Additionally, it is clear in the movie that Faline is a female from the length of her eyelashes...and the fact that Bambi and another buck fight over Faline and at the end of the movie, she and Bambi have twins.

Bambi is a male deer, in the film after the mother dies the deer grows antlers and loses the spots from childhood, this only happeneds in the outside world to male deers.
Just my guess as to why people say Bambi is a guy.

because when he was born, all the animals went to see the great PRINCE of the forest. Bambi grows antlers and matures into a buck, so i guess thats why hes definitely male.
by the way, and Bambi is a good name.

cuz he is male!!! havent you ever noticed in the Bambi movie that when he was walking around in the forest at the beginning of the movie all of the animals say " Good Morning Little Prince!"
in the cutest voices and he grows up to be a stag and him and Faline(his girlfriend;another deer; life long friend;doe) end up having twins(a boy and a girl)

Because he is. He falls in love with a female deer and they have babies. So Bambi is a male deer, not a gay female deer. They drew him in what modern day would say is feminine. However in the time period it came out that is how they drew young babies, animals etc. Large 'doe-y' eyes, smaller proportions, etc.
