probably, because it is a different alphabet.

both are extemely challanging. First, since the writing is symbol based, you need to learn a whole new "alphabet"..there is no chance at word recognition from sight reading initially because there is nothing familiar to look at. Both languages have formal and informal speech and grammar, the use of which is determined by who you are speaking to , where and why. This can add another challnge to it. Finally, there are no silent letters in Japanese....everthing is pronounced...and their sentence structure is very different. I lived in Japan for 7 years and had a workable vocabulary and could understand fairly well. I could not read or write muchbeyond a few basic things. My advice is to try and find a teacher or tutor who grew up speaking the language. It often makes things a bit better since they understand the cultural subtelties. But take heart.....teh Japanese and Chinese find learning English just as challanging!

They are both difficult due to the complexity of the alphabets. Pronunciation is easy. I also find it difficult that pronouns are not used often in Japanese. So I often don't know what the subject of a sentence is.

the difficulty actually depends on your orientation and your attitude. i liked japanese more, so i learned it faster than i learned korean (so it isn't chinese, but hey, it's still a different language). but if ever, don't study two languages at the same time... the probability of you getting them mixed up is very high. trust me.
