My friend was correcting me on my email when she asked me how much my gym membership costs me. I told her "It costed me $400 when I first joined last year," and she said there's no such word as costed. Is this true? And if so, how should I have worded my sentence?

I've searched online dictionaries and there are entries for "costed" but the descriptions seem a little different from what my sentence was saying. So does it mean "costed" is a word, but just not used correctly in my sentence?

"Cost" is an irregular verb and to make it past you don't add the -ed. It stays as "cost" in the past too.

What you put in your additional details section is correct. Costed is a word but it shouldn't have been used in your sentence. You should have said something like, "It cost me $400 when I joined last year."

If its a word you used it in the wrong sentence. It should be it cost me 400 or it costs 400.

You should say the apple cost you $10. Costed is not a word. By the way, that is a pretty expensive apple.

The correct phrase as you use it, is "It cost me $400 when I first joined, last year."

Despite what several people have suggested, "costed" is a word, if an infrequently used one. If you do a cost-analysis of something, you can properly say, "I costed something out."

costed is not a word. cost can be used in past tense too. the proper way of saying that would be "it cost me $400" I know it sounds stupid, but its true. A better way of wording it would be "The cost for the membership was $400"

"It cost me $400" would be correct if you meant that was how much you paid for it.
"I have costed gym membership at $400" would mean that you went out and found an estimate of how much gym membership would cost.

The word 'costed' sounds like it's a past transitive verb for multiple items. Sound it out and ask yourself if it makes sense. If it's a 'no' the it should be corrected. 'Cost' is both a present and past verb for non-plural items only. Sometimes grammer can be funny that way.
