One of the simplest is to look at anthropological theories in the past. Henry Lewis Morgan is perhaps one of the best examples to use. He is a member of those who believed that cultures evolves from lesser to better. Under this type of theory, the "natives" often represented a lower class of people which would build up to the epitome of civilization, the more "modern" cultures such as the British. His views may be seen in his article, "Ethical Periods", which lays out the various periods of cultural growth ranging from lower status of savagery to the status of civilization.

It will also be good to look for books written from the beginning of the 1900's and earlier. These will more likely than not contain the references you are wishing to look for. For example, there are examples in the classic "Sherlock Holmes" stories.

One of the current controversies is regarding the use of Native American culture, images (dancing and headresses, as mascots), names, and racial slurs (braves, chiefs, savages, redskins) in American sports(elementary, highschool, college, and pro). I think this would be a great subject to explore and you can probably find many Web sites dealing with this controversy or you could use any team as an example.
