Look at it this way... Who had market dominance before the age of the IBM clones and Windows 95? Apple, that's who. Is it entirely impossible for this shift to take place once again? No. I think Apple is doing a remarkable job and certainly making leaps in technology that will take Microsoft years to achieve. Vista, anyone? It's been in development for five years, just to catch up to OS X Tiger! By the time Vista is released, Apple will be ready with Leopard and a whole slew of new technologies. I think Apple is preparing itself to become a major player in the desktop industry, once more. Even Google CEO Eric Schmidt believes Apple is making a great comeback. Here's a link to the article.
Remember, if it weren't for the Macintosh in 1984, there would be no Microsoft Windows. Do a Google image search on Windows 1.0 and Macintosh System 1, you'll see how Microsoft ripped off the Mac GUI.

My first experience with a 'personal computer' was with an Apple IIc, way back in the stone age, I was 11 or 12 at the time. East Middle School, Auburn, NY.
I played a game on it called Lemonade, and I was bit by the techie bug and he never let go.
Though I have mainly used DOS based programs after that, and now into Windows, I'll never forget the monocolor green of the blips and the cursor and running my own basic program that allowed me to put my name on my computer screen just as big as I wanted, and for those of you who DON'T remember that, the larger letters we're all comprised of your smaller alphabet. The great big M (for instance) was made by couple hundred smaller M's...
As for ever going back to Apple, or Macs, I can't say. It's kind alike the betaxmax...if you even know what that is, and the VHS VCR. No matter how good it is, it all boils down to popularity. Apple has it's IPOD, and we have Windows. I've been using Windows since the mid 90's, it's come a long way from when you used to be able to exit out of it to get back into DOS so you coul dunderstand what the hell you were doing, of course, all the best games were DOS based anyway!
We'll have to see. Personally, I don't think Apple will ever overtake the PC world again. They had their chance and they blew it a long time ago, they just couldn't get it together, and Bill Gates did.
Just a bit of trivia for you...do you know how Apple got it's name? Designers sat around trying to come up with a name for their new operating system and they just couldn't decide on anything. One bright person popped up with 'If we don't have a name by 5:00 p.m. we'll call it Apple'...well I guess 5:00 came. The rest of the story goes on to say that the guy was eating an apple, but others say it was on the desk, so you can figure that one out, either way, it's a cute story.

I have my doubts that macs will ever take more of the market share from PC's. The reason why pc's rule the world is because everyone can make them(DELL, IBM, ACER, HP, ALIENWARE), which keeps prices low. Only Apple corps. can make a mac, which keeps the price high. People are always looking for a deal. I used mac's when I was in grade school too. That was almost 20 years ago, yet the world still uses PC's.

What Kasey C wrote reads about suitable to me. i'd in simple terms favor to operate that a computer is the computer, that are man made through a huge type of diverse agencies. homestead windows is the operating platforms (software) that make it so so that you could use the computer (or it quite is the wish). Microsoft does make computers. they in simple terms ensue to be Xboxes. Apple on the different hand, so some distance as i understand, would not inspire different agencies to construct computers to run the Mac OS. Edit: i'm particular you adult males understand the version between a mandatory Processing Unit and some thing of the computer. yet, Intel and AMD make CPUs. i imagine they do promote assembled complete kit computers, yet fairly some the marketplace for computers are different agencies. having suggested that possibly no longer alot of credit is via human beings that grant such issues because the motherboard and case, if that, and positioned all of it which includes a CPU, confusing drives, RAM and ability furnish. Edit2: in simple terms searching suitable right here my case is an previous one through MSI. My CPU (+warmth sink) is an Intel. XFX made my video card. RoHS made my motherboard. Cooler carry close made my skill furnish. i visit't truly tell who did my confusing drives and RAM. that's all Frankenstein.

yes and why not?
For mac to be more common but not just stand out as a fancy and expensive hero!
The company needs to do these:
:) offer much economical versions so people who like mac do not have to settle for the lousy pcs.
:) educate and empower people that their perception about mac as being a computer only for "graphic designers" is wrong.
:) make sure all retail giants like walmart carry not just pc but mac too! Have you seen a single mac in walmart?
:) provide better financial assistance to students so they can buy what they love - mac.
:) offer extra incentives to computer repairing centers so they can provide better supports thus helping increase support centers for mac.
:) increase more software for mac so that does not remain an issue for people to go for pcs
:) provide commercial ads not only about how mac is better than pc in terms of ease of use and peace of mind but also about the cost of ownership (i.e. Purchase cost + additional software cost such as antivirus/antiadware/antispyware, computer repair + maintenance cost) also would include the cost/time/value of protecting operating system and software. Mac has lower cost of ownership and the company hasnot done enough to put those words in everyone's
ears. So that needs attention.
:) mac's ad should be in all womens magazines. Most decisions for household products are made by women.

I doubt it. Intelligent people know that Macs freeze up more often than a refrigerator, and crash more often than hijacked airplanes. Seriously, if you want a machine that can't run for more than fifteen minutes, go ahead and switch to a Mac. Myself, I prefer a computer with five times the memory capacity, about twenty times the application diversity, and one million times the efficiency.

One of the real issues is the availability of software. Most business applications run on PCs.
