Itunes can read wma files...well it can convert them into aac or a standard mp3 format..
Easiest way to import files onto your Ipod is to rip the tracks onto your computer using Itunes....just make sure that you change the preference to mp3 encoding instead of aac...that way if you ever change to another brand of portable player you can still copy your tunes across with minimal fuss

More information is needed, such as where the file has come from etc. I would be surprised if it was something you ripped yourself.

However it could be that the file is not mp3 format and someone has changed the file extention to .mp3.

Also the file may be corrupt or its licensed may have expired.

the ipod will accept all MP3 files, except possibly ones that you've made on a PC using Windows Media Player if you've accidentally used Microsoft's Fairplay DRM.

If an MP3 fileis actally WMA file and it has DRM (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-drm.htm) depends on where did you get it, then it is possible that the file can not be played until you remove DRM protection (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-drm.htm).
