Basically they were getting along ok while under the iron rule of Saddam. Sunnis had the government jobs and were generally better off financially, but other than that, Shiites could get educations and jobs. Many neighborhoods were mixed. Murder and street violence were rare.
The country has been slipping into lawlessness and chaos ever since the US occupation. The US civilian authority and the constitution that was drafted with US favored the Shiites. The change in the balance of power between the 2 groups did not help, as did the lack of police protection on the streets.
About a year ago, one group bombed the other's most holy mosque or shrine, and things got much worse after that. The articles below tell about some of the revenge killings, escalations, and death squads.

It is based on them fighting over who is the lawful ruler of Islam. Shites say it has to be a direct line from the Prophet (PBUH), Sunnis say not.

Why is there so much animosity between Catholics and Protestants? That, for the most part, christendom has moved beyond killing each other over these differences in thought is beside the point.

Its a generational thing.
They were each brought up to hate the other.
They dont know why.
They just know that's the way its always been.

why anybody hates different people is beyond me,, some dont like jews, blacks, whites, mexicans ect,, i never understood why people will just hate people because they are people, it needs to stop, there is really no reason to hate anybody just becauase of color or religion or ethnicity or sexual pref,, its all just stupid

as long as people are different there will always be some discontent.
same as blacks and whites, same as muslims and jews. people will always find an excuse to discriminate.
