You really need a memory card. If its just for saving then you can pick up a small one on-line for £9.99. Cheap 2 gig cards on eBay are usually counterfeit and are not as robust as Sony or sandisk cards

The only reason you would NEED a memory card is to save your games. That said, he might WANT a memory card for other purposes (a lot of my friends have them to store music and videos). I cannot tell you how much they might be, as different size cards have different costs.
