The answer depends on the strength of the acid.

If the acid that was spilled was vinegar (5% Acetic Acid), cleaning with water would be enough.

If you spilled an acid like concentrated sulfuric or hydrochloric, you would have to deal with neutralzing with a base of some sort. An acid spill (if the acid is strong enough) can actually require a professional cleaning.

Cleaning is a must and action depends on the following factors:

So, before picking up the mop or paper towel you have to know what acid you are dealing with ? What is it's strength?

Example: If is Sulfuric or Nitric acid (Concentrated).
Then cleaning with paper towel could be disastrous. Each chemical comes with a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) document and you need to follow the recommended procedure for individual.

Regardless of the procedure used one must use appropriate safety gloves, apron, boots, eye ware as recommended by the manufacturer of the chemical.

Most of the MSDS information is usually kept where the chemicals are stored. It is the responsibility of the Employer or the person who purchased it to maintain such documentation. If you cannot find them you can go the chemical suppliers and retrieve from their website.

You can always your local Fire Department for help.
