No. You can not put anything except USPS mail into a mailbox. Officially, you can not even hang a paper in a plastic bag on the mailbox itself. You can use the post, but not the mailbox.

I used to have a paper route, and that's one of the first things they told us.

It is a Federal Offense, a felony punishable by prison sentence, and/or serious fines. Just don't do it.
Is there a separate paper box, that the daily newspaper is placed in, near the mailboxes, where you live. Those are not regulated by government. If the directory is not large enough to bother the paper delivery personnel, it's okay to place it in there.

It is illegal to put anything into a mail box. Only the Postal Service can place items there. I suggest you stick the neighborhood sheet into the door jamb.

it is a felony (seldom inforced) to put any thing in a mail box,mail boxes are considered goverment property even though the home owner bought it,same thing if you punch a mailman its a automatic felony

You can put it ON the mailbox, but not IN it. Use tape.
