you can make an electro magnet take an old nail, wrap a wire around it. The more wraps, the better the magnetic pull. Take each end and put it to the + and - of a 9 volt battery.

Try this: Get a large steel spike at the hardware store ( about 3/8 to 1/2 " thick and 6 or so long ) and a couple of feet of copper wire...small gauge. Wrap the spike with the wire round and round. Then attach one end of the wire to the positive terminal of a battery, ( a regular D cell should do it ) the other end to the negative, and viola! you have created a magnet field, also known as an electro-magnet. The point of the spike will now be a magnet. Break the field by removing one of the copper leads and the current stops flowing and the field disappears. Placing a simple on/of switch on one of the leads will allow you to stop and start the magnet easily. This is the type of magnet used in salvage yards to pick up materials. You are building a miniature version.

Put an unmagnetised nail in the north - south direction.
Keep hitting it lightly with a hammer or similar.
The atoms in the nail will gradually realign to the earths magnetic field. It will be a very weak magnet though.
OR
Use the method suggested by others, using copper wire.
Make sure it is not bare copper wire though.
Enamel covered is best.

Take a piece of hard steel, a screwdriver or a small file and stroke a permanent magnet along it several times and the steel will become quite a reasonable magnet, you can demagnetise it by hammering it or by stroking the magnet along it ,using the other pole of the magnet, until the magnetism is gone

they are many ways:
1. take a iron rod & a magnet. from the middle of the iron bar drag only one of the poles towards to the end of the iron bar.
repeat this 20-30times.

2. wrap copper wire around a iron bar and connect it to a 12v battery, remove after 5mins

you can not make a magnet. A magnet is a rock.

Hi>
I feel that you already know the answers. Yet, and just for fun ...
Rub a pin up and down a bit of amber.
Of for a really "go-away" one, stick something nice and ferrous in a magnetron unit.
It will stop and knacker a watch.

you can make a electromagnet by taking a piece of iron and wrapping insulated copper wire over it and take a 9v battery which will be available in shops and connect it will notice that small pins will get attracted towards it
