A rose bush named after her, and a card you have actually looked at and thought appropriate, not just the first one that comes to hand!

Hey, I'm not worth a great deal of money, but have found that the best presents I can give are the ones that I've made somehow (and receiving them from friends is nice). There are now so many was to be 'creative' I don't think there's really an excuse.

Last year, I gave a lot of my own photography, this year I'm doing the same and making up colleges.

PLEASE! Do you know her or not? Think about the simple pleasures in life. Those are what's really important, not the price tag. One of my all time favorite gifts was a $3 book for flower pressing. Honestly I've never used the thing. But, the point was my 10 year old step-son knew how much I love my flower garden, spent time thinking about the things I love and went for something in that frame of reference. At 24 he's still a thoughtful gift-giver. When gift time rolls around I'm always eager to see what he's thought of this time.
Give it a try!

Why not just get her a beautiful bouquet of her favourite flowers and take her for a meal at a top restaurant or take her to the theatre and hire a chauffeur driven car to take you ,most women would like to be spoilt rotten rather than have a gift that they don't like.

Something that would remind her of a pleasant memory of her childhood...like a repro antique doll if she liked dolls, or something. Seriously, a friend of mine bought her DH a Scalextric car track one Christmas because she couldn't think of what to get him and he loved it! Something unexpected, that will free her inner child. Sounds like she could use it. A Slinky and a kaleidoscope spring to mind. Maybe a nice little basket with some "kid fun" things in it, with a nice bow?

Just get her something meaningful something from your heart that shows how much you value the friendship you have with her. Have something engraved or write her a poem or a letter filled with lots of memories the two of share from past to present or just get her a nice card or a painting of some kind.

what neat friends you have.... i would take something away from her and then give it back to her next year maybe she'll learn to appreciate things like a dog would

She sounds blessed - she's made it to 50, she's loaded and she's got friends like you. She needs to learn the pain of life in order to be a more rounded person, I think. Put poo through her letter box and send her fleas in her card. She'll thank you for it in the long run...

An occasion suited to her likes - whatever you get her she will be able to afford so you would have to get her something that she wouldn't think of, or not realise how nice it may be like a pamper day or a balloon ride or any day according to budget.
