what is the word?

When a word has two or more distinct meanings, they are called "homonyms". For example "swallow" the bird, and "swallow" as in eat or drink. The two words have just accidentally ended up being spelled and spoken the same as each other in modern English, but they came into it from different words in different older languages.

When a word has some slightly different meanings, but they all arise from one main meaning, they are just called "senses" of that word. For example "crane" the bird, and a "crane" for lifting weights is only called that because it looks like the bird, so it's the same word; and "crane" as in stretching your neck to see something better is only called that because it makes you look like the bird, so it's the same word again.

There are at least two different "meanings' of any word.

Denotative - dictionary definition
Connotative - feeling or sentiment the word conjures up in an individual

For example the denotative meaning of "rape" can be found here (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rape), but the connotative meaning can vary from person to person depending on their experience. A vicitim of such a crime will likely attach a much stronger meaning to the term than another.
