They practiced something along the lines of marshall arts, which the English called boxing. They got the name the boxers and the rebellion, the Boxer Rebellion.

The rebellion was initiated by a society known as the Righteous Harmony Society or in contemporary English, "Boxers", a group which initially opposed, but later reconciled itself, to China's ruling Manchu Qing Dynasty.

It was a mistranslation of "Righteopus Harmonious Band". They thought it was "Righteous Harmonious Fists", so they were called the Boxers.
