Take the 40W to the 17 S.

Stay off of I-17. It's a bottle neck, especially on weekends but every day is a problem. The 277, 260 and the Beeline through Holbrook, Payson and into Scottsdale/Mesa are the way to go. HOURS shorter, too, because you're traveling the hypotenuse of a triangle, instead of making the right angle direction change in Flag.

That I-17 Camp Verde Hill isn't any fun either. And the scenery through the Rim Country is not something to miss, even if cell phone reception is intermittent at best.

The only way I've gone is the 40 to Flagstaff, to I-17. I'd debate the I-17 traffic warning--unless there is an accident, it only clogs as you get close to the city and that will be true about any freeway coming into town. The only way I've seen it really slow is during snow season in the higher elevations if there are bad driving conditions.
