A lot of Fish oil on the market today does not specify which part of what fish is used to make the oil. Therefore how can people who buy these products know what they are getting? Fish!!!! could mean Mackeral hallibut, cod, etc, all with different levels of omega 3. In the race to sell us suppliments to help us be healthy, are the people selling "fish oil" actually selling oil which may or may not be that good for us but making us think it's doing us some good? Talking point for a Wednesday. Any ideas?

Your statement seems a little far-fetched. Fish oil would have a nutrition label stating how much omega 3 you are getting per dose. If it isn't doing us any good then the company is really throwing itself open for legal skirmishes. However it may be possible that the fish oil contains traces of heavy metals such as mercury - but if that were the case, I'd imagine FDA would quickly get wind of it and take action.

Oh, heck yes! Fish oil is so nasty tasting. But, i do have this stuff called "Super Omega Complex" (from Wal-Mart) and it does state on the label that it contains fish oil from anchovy and bonito.

This stuff isn't regulated by the USP, so yes, theoretically, manufacturers could be pretty unethical. And let's add the increasing threat of mercury to the equation and it makes ya wonder.

Caveat Emptor - buyer beware.

Well, Omega 3 comes from oily fish,so if you buy your product from a reputable health shop it will state where the fish comes from and what fish it is ! You will also recognise the quality by the price you pay ! Cod and halibut by the way are no oily fish !
Hope it helps!

Still can't acquire a taste for fish - the closest I get to it is seafood chowder!

I buy Udo's Choice, and take three tablespoons daily with my breakfast. Its benefits surpass all other oils or pills I've ever tried.

Boots sell an alternative to the fish oil, it is suitable for vegetarians and is made out of grain, I forget exactly what it is called but is in a 'tallish' blue plastic pot. It is fractionally more than fish oil products, but only pence.
