I have a head of black hair and small strands of white hair around. My hair is long healthy and beautiful, but I don't like to color treat my hair too often and I think I may have to start. What is the reason for grey/white hairs?

The cause of gray/white hair is the lack of melanin...That is what gives our skin and hair color. For reasons still unknown, certain parts of the body will just stop producing melanin and things like gray hair or lighter patches on the skin will appear. Sun light causes the skin to produce more and that is where we get suntans from. Some people do not produce near as much as others and they have a much lighter complexion. That does not mean they will get gray hair faster, just that they will not tan as easily. The follicles of the hairs that are white or gray are no longer produce any melanin...

Well as we get older the pigments in are hair start to lose its color, and sometimes its past down with your genes.

Thanks, now I've got that old Alice in Chains song stuck in my head, the one that has the chorus: 'You're old you're old you're old.'
Or was it Soundgarden?
