Call ahead to be sure. But, I was told that at my first ultrasound to drink 32 ounces of water ahead of time. I developed Gestational Diabetes and required a weekly ultrasound and non-stress test for 9 weeks before my daughter's birth. At those later ultrasounds, I was told that the baby was big enough that I didn't need to drink water or do any preparation before the ultrasound.

Yes you need to drink about two or three pints depending on your size.
If you drink nothing, they will make you wait until your bladder is full, however if you drink to much, it makes the picture fuzzy and they send you to the loo and back for a better reading.
Drinking water creates the best picture.
You are best drinking a pint before you go out, then when you get to the appointment, just keep sipping water - they usually have a water butt or something there purposely, as it's really down to each individual as to how much you should or shouldn't drink.
But definately drink something, otherwise you will be waiting ages.

They tell you to drink a quart, but this is way too much, especially if you're still having morning sickness. Drink just enough to give you a full bladder (two cups of coffee should do it.) I tried to drink a quart of water before my ultrasound two months ago and I ended up puking it up in the hospital lobby :(

When I was pregnant, I was told to have a full bladder. When I came in and was not full, they made me drink more water. It makes it easier to view the baby because it pushes them more to the stomach wall.
I have to agree not to drink too much because you may end up with an uncomfortable bladder, especially when they are pushing to get a good image of your child! That can be a problem!
Good luck and my best wishes for a healthy baby!

No, you wont need to because the baby is soooo tiny now it is easy to see without a protruding bladder! Not until your 3rd ultrasound when you get to find out the gender and see its organs will you need to chug down lots of water, they will let you know when this is though...good luck its soo exciting. I am 23 weeks and having a boy!

It depends on how far a long you are and what kind they are doing.
Call your doctor.
Transvaginal...where they insert a wand inside you...no water at all....in fact it would be pretty uncomfortable.
Over the stomach after 15 weeks about three large classes....your cervix and bladder are already out of the way.
Over the stomach under 15 weeks...lots of water very full bladder! Drink it one hour before!

There is no need to drink a lot for your ultrasound. It's sound waves that create an image. Drink water anyway because it's a healthy thing to do but it won't affect the ultrasound.

Yes, about 36 - 48 ozs within an hr or so. It makes the images easier to see. If you get a vaginal ultrasound, you'll have to empty your bladder immediately before the procedure.

I had always heard that you should have a toe curling full bladder so I did just that. It was awful. The sonographer told me to partially empty my bladder and next time just drink like an 8oz drink. I would drink enough that you need to pee but are not completely uncomfortable.
