I believe that a windows-based system is the best way to go since Apple's OS X.xx has a security holes in it. Windows Vista (which i am testing for Microsoft) is more stable, and is cooler-looking if you go that way. The system to run this would be an Acer, Toshiba, or Fujitsu notebook computer.

Macs (Intel Cores) and PCs, for the most part, are capable of doing the exact same things. Macs, in combination with Apple's Boot Camp, can run Windows XP natively. With the next OS revision, Leopard, Windows XP should be able to be run side-by-side with OS 10.5. All the other software mainstream software like Office and Adobe products are available for both systems.
When it comes to spyware, PCs are much more vulnerable. With Macs become more and more popular, spyware creators are finding interest in breaking the Mac, with Mac hacking competitions increasing in popularity.
There are also a few web sites that don't run correctly on OS X, and some MySpace pages will make a Mac do weird things.
There are claims that people have successfully installed OS X on PCs. Considering the both PCs and Macs now utilize Intel Cores, the video cards originate from the same places, hard drives are of the same physical features, and both understand each other, it is more of which you want.
The Macs are more of an appearal accessory, and come at a premium, and OS X is prettier to look at. PCs can be configured at a cheaper price, but don't have the sexy appeal. But style is arbitrary, and might not justify the price.

Depends on what you want to do on the system. Generally, why get a Mac and not use the os that comes with it? Mac people will jump in and tell you how Mac is safer, cleaner, prettier, easier, better featured, and so on. They may be right. But 90% of the computers in the world run Windows and so applications and the net tends to be "geared" to that.
But since you're talking laptop, you're not talking running games or doing much in the way of really heavy applications, so I would just go with the Mac os.

Go with the macintosh. It has better security and is far superior when it comes to working with USB devices such as iPod. I've heard that it downloads iTunes ten times faster than PC. I only know secondhand because I don't own a PC. I've been a mac user since Apple II. The mac is also more flexable at handling PC files and there is software that enables you to run Windows on a mac.

Most software runs on Windows. If you want to run games, accounting software or anything to do with business, you are much safer using a Windows machine. Windows machines tend to be cheaper as well.
If you want to work with media files such as pictures, video, audio designs, then the tools and interfaces on the Mac are better. Integration with the iPod is going to be better as well.

Anything is better than Windows. I don't know about the availability of software for Mac, but if it runs what you need, I would go for that.

either one would be acceptable because the rumors that macs don't get viruses is incorrect because a little while ago over the news there was a virus that stole all the information you put into your mac computer
MACS SUCK (just my opinion) because they always freeze up you don't even have to hit the shutdown button to shut the peice of junk down
