Wayne, he's not talking about Hillary or "New Democrats" - he's talking about the people have no idea what a true Conservative is (small government, lower tax burdens) and who listen to talk radio because it lets them get all pissed at gays and abortionists.
The Conservative movement was not originally about social issues at all. In fact, early Conservatives began looking like liberals by the time Republicans began letting the Radical Right into their fold. Restriciting abortion rights was considered a government intrusion into a personal decision - thus it was BIG government. Setting legal restrictions on gay relationships was considered BIG government.
Of course, these Conservatives were blown by the wayside by when Reagan's crew allowed the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells of America to take over the Republican party. Many true conservatives will still vote Republican because they feel they have no choice, but there is not a true conservative in Republican leadership these days at all.
There are only BIG government, social rightists, who will spend this country blind and only make tax cuts to cowtow to the few fiscal conservatives they have left in their camp.
A tax and spend liberal sounds almost refreshing compared to a cut-tax and spend-more Republican right about now.

Liberal politicians who try to appear conservative do so for a very good reason; Americans are still basically conservative and they want their politicians to talk to them that way. Witness the astronomical success of Conservative talk radio and then contrast that with the launch of the liberal Air America. (Air America is now in bankruptcy) Once in office, of course, their liberal colors then become evident. But when re-election time rolls around again they once again begin gravitating rightward in their speeches. This is especially true of those seeking the Oval Office. Consider Hillary Clinton. As former Clinton advisor Dick Morris recently pointed out; "She's as close to a European socialist as we have in the Senate." Yet she's seeking the presidency so look at her newfound "centrist philosophy" voting record since she's been in the Senate......even supporting Pres. Bush on the Iraq war! Of course no one should be fooled for an instant. If she attains the presidency her extreme leftist views will quickly become apparent. The same is of course true of the other Democratic contenders for '08. Centrists or Conservatives every one!
Until, that is, they get sworn in. Then the left-wing 'screw America fest' begins.

Better question: Are there any true conservatives left? There certainly aren't any in Washington. The GOP spends money like it's going out of style, offers up a foreign policy that is not conservative, but rather radical, and then conjures up those "family values" issues at election time to dupe those who sincerely care about those sorts of issues into voting for them one more time. If Bush were a true conservative, he'd secure our borders instead of kowtowing to corporate interests that profit from cheap illegal labor, and ratchet down the extreme spending in Congress.

No, as long as they get their votes they really do not care what they are, they will even cheat at elections to see that their person wins.
