It's apples, boiled in a little water and sugar. In the UK it is often served with pork.

In some more prudish American novels, it can mean "nonsense".

it's what comes out of your horse when you feed him apples. my dad says the horse is my responsibility, and because he doesn't want applesauce on the carpet or anywhere, i always have to eat it =(
