Why would you want to take a book out of a child's hands? Let them use their imagination.

So to my question--do you agree that public schools should ban Harry Potter because it talks about magic and some people think magic is a religion?

Thanks Bueko, I forgot they have successfully banned 1984, To Kill a Mockingbird, Huck Finn......... There must be something in these books that I didn't see because I loved them. Of course, my parents were actually involved with my schooling and didn't blame others when I screwed up.....

They banned 1984? Why? Is it because our own governement is on a path to become as repressive as the one portrayed in the book?

Well, I don't agree with the wording or your question. Parents have a right to shield THEIR children from material they find questionable including banning the child from reading said material. But the line generally should stop at the school library doors. What some parents might find questionable will be okay for others.

In this case, it sounds like an unreasonable person with a fixation for Harry Potter. I've also seen people try to get the Bible banned from school libraries arguing that it is government endorsement of religion. That's plain nuts. Offering one option among thousands isn't any more of an endorsement than saying "this seems to be a popular book". I am a "Bible thumper" and I've read all six of the Harry Potter books. I've not seen anything to suggest that the magic is 'religiously' based. At least it gets kids reading again.

When I was a child I would look at pictures in comic books and make up my own story as to what the pictures showed. Then when I was about 5 my dad started helping me learn a few simple words in the comic books. By the time I started school I could read simple stuff and learned more complicated words if someone helped me pronounce and define them. When I was about 8 I read my first real book!! "Black Beauty"!!! And in the words of Forest Gump; "I was a reading"!!!!! I think Black Beauty was up to something and should be banned!!! Heck, after I read that book I have had the inclination to read everything! Heck, we sure not want that happening with our children today. Dang, just think what may happen if they learned to read and have an imagination. I read Harry Potter too! Ha!

NO Harry Potter should not be banned. I wonder if that stupid lady has ever even read the books...I would be willing to bet that she hasn't! I had a problem with the books too, when they first came out, for the same reason. I thought they were a kids' version of witchcraft. However, after reading them, I thought they were excellent books.
I guess L Frank Baum's Oz books should be banned also, if Harry Potter's going to be banned. And Piers Anthony books. And Madeleine L'Engle. And...oh, hell, just ban ALL books, then we wouldn't have to worry about it!
My goodness, people are so ignorant!

well 1st all magic is not a religion, its a satin knowledge.
but as a harry potter book is just a imajinary character, character like this r so common. in old & new litratutre u may find many character like this, u can say Tarazan, alice, n so many , so let the childs read what they r. coz these books dont only have magic but so many other things ,, like, they teach a child that with hard struggle & devotion they may find thier goals, they can develop a creiteria in daily life how to manage with some awful conditions, reading is the best way to learn (not the porn books) ok

This has nothing to do with the 1st Amendment. It is just a few idiots and bad parents trying to blame everything but themselves.

The 1st Amendment prevents Congress from censoring free speech. Your local school board can ban any book they want, no matter how stupid that is. The only books children should be protected from is explicit pornography.
