Typically a carved pumpkin only stays firm for as little as 48 hours. If you want it to last longer (up to 2-3 weeks), after you carve it soak it in water and then cover with petroleum jelly. The pumpkin will absorb the water, and the petroleum jelly will hold in the moisture, and also gives it a nice "shiny" surface. It sounds strange, but it works, we have done it for years! Hope this helps, Happy Halloween!

It depends on how hot it is where you are. If it's warm (over 70F) and the pumpkin is in the sun, then I'd only carve it a few days ahead of time or it will turn to mush. If it's colder, then it will last longer. Just know that once you start carving, the decaying process will speed up considerably.

Ok, I was going to answer but PEACHI_7...already gave you the best advice!
I use Petroleum jelly on the cut parts of my pumpkins and it just seems to work better. Also, Soaking the pumpkin in water for 10 minutes after cutting, THEN drying the cut out parts then apply jelly works great!
SNAPS PEACH!
BTW, UNCUT pumpkins can last for months in a cool , dry place. I use them for decor then cook them in pie for thanksgiving.

just a couple days before because too early and it'll end up with bugs buzzing around in it...or some little brat smashes it.
