Try pressing F10 or F11 consistently when the computer boots to get you to select SAFE mode for Windows.

if you have a set of Recovery disks which came with the machine, try and boot the machine on those CD's (or DVD's), and run the recovery program, you might have to press F10 or F12 to boot the machine on CD. Run the recovery program and try running the machine after that. If the machine still has a problem, OR if it does not run the recovery program succesffuly, then there might be a problem with your Hard Drive or Memory.
Please note that running the recovery may delete all your data (if there is any) on the hard disk.
fee lfree to write back if you still have problems, or if you want to know more.
Good luck !!

Hard to tell from such a short description but many start up problems in windows xp are caused by faulty memory always my first check, if you have more than one memory stick installed try removing them one at a time and see if it starts
with it not starting in safe mode I would bet on a memory problem beg or borrow some to suit your machine before you start messing about with reformatting or wiping the hard drive so you dont loose all the info on there

Hi....my laptop is doing exactly the same....if you persevere it will eventually start but it may take an hour..i find it only does this when turned off for the night. At the moment i am leaving it powered on until i have time to reformat.I find reformatting will cure all issues.

For desktop, to trigger the menu it is usually F8...
and then there will be a couple of options you may pick from..
In this case, I suggest that you boot up with your XP cd and perform a boot from it.
when asked to repair just do that..
Hope the info helps...
PS: sounds like registry or MFT corruptions
Try reading this and hope it will help...http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
