There are some good suggestions here especially the outside. It is partly because of the sun, but more importantly the natural ozone in the air that is killing the bacteria.
One thing you must know, Bleach (Chlorine) does not kill mold and mildew. It just changes the color of it to clear or white. It WILL come back and more of it. Bleach has never cured mold and mildew problems.
OxyClean would be the best from a store. A biodegradable cleaner and ozonated water mix would be the very best.

use baking soda in you laundry and that will help get the smell out but if there is mildew on the towels then you need to put 1/2 cup of rubbing alchol and that will kill it and then dry on high heat!

While the towels are wet, hang them outside in the SUN all day...then wash with vinegar and soap...Smell will come right out..Works for me.
The sun will remove alot of the bacteria and take out any oils that are in the towels also

For any really bad stinks on washable fabrics, using household ammonia in your wash water is best (about one cup). Use the proper amount of laundry soap, NO BLEACH because mixing ammonia and bleach can kill you (it actually kills about 6 housewives a year that aren't careful enough) and washing soda if you have hard water.
If it is a soaked in smell like pet urine or moth balls, set the clothes to soak in a bucket of water with a cup of ammonia added. Cover the bucket and let stand overnight.
Finish off your wash in the normal manner.
Ammonia has never failed to clear out ANY stink I've used it for.

Wash the towels again in hot water with the detergent and baking soda. Hang them outside to dry completely (weather permitting) or dry completely in the dryer. Fabric softener also adds fragrance.

Well if you already dried them or even if you didnt I would try rewashing them with bleach if white or a color safe bleach if not.
I stopped using colored towels except for the beach towels. Now all our bath towels are white. No one sees them anyways so who cares if they match your decor. This way I can bleach them every wash and get out stains and germs. The bleach they have now doesnt really destroy fabrics as it used to. Also with colored towels, no matter how good they were I would get discoloration at times for no reason. Then they looked like crap, lol.
