I know the country code is +44 but what does that mean?

The + means "insert your international dialling prefix here" i.e. if you're dialling out of the UK, you dial 00 plus the country code, plus the number.. So, you need to find out how to dial out of the US, then add 44 for the UK, then your city prefix minus the "0" at the start, then the actual number.

From Australia, we dial 001144. I don't know if this is the same in the States.
