1. Galapagos Ecology - There's always something out there impacting the Galapagos ecosystem. Unfortunately, it is usually something related to exploitation of resources. Today it is all about overfishing causing a decline in the albatross (spelling?) population.
2. Oil - The rise of oil prices has caused many South American nations to rethink deals they made with global oil giants. Ecuador recently took back an oilfield that was leased to Occidental - representing 7% of Occidental's oil output. Of course, everyone is suing everyone else over the issue.
3. Volcanoes - This one is an interesting topic b/c a good % of the population and the capital city of Quito are surrounded by active volcanoes. Ecuador is working with international agencies to develop emergency plans, monitoring and relief programs.
4. The Amazon - Just like the Galapagos, there is always a conflict between exploiting resources and the ecosystem. In both cases, money usually beats ecology. Plenty of info out there on this subject.
5. Ecuador and the War on Drugs - Ecuador borders Columbia, one of the largest drug producers in the world. The US has agreements with Ecuador to use the country as a base against Colombian operations. In areas like the Amazon, the line between Colombia and Ecuador is very wavy; so drug activities and kidnappings are not uncommon.

There are multiple news sites on the internet. One of them is news.google.com and you can simply type "ecuador" into the query box and hit "search news" button.
You can also type in "ecuador" +"geography" and pull up specifically news stories about the geography of ecuador -- I noticed that there are some news storied about ecuador's oil industry and that the geography and climate are well suited to it.
