I majored in Political Sci. and graduated 6 years ago. Since that time I haven't been able to find a "real" job and for most of the time since I have been employed as a security guard (or have done temping). People keep telling me to keep plugging away, to keep looking, etc., but I mean, come on...is it just me or is a degree in Political Science as worthless as Confederate money? My resume is posted everywhere, on monster.com, on usajobs.gov, etc., In fact, I've only managed to land about ten interviews since graduating from college, so the problem must be more my resume than my interviewing skills. I hate the idea of going back to school for another degree because of all the money I've already spent getting the one I have, and also because it makes it seem as though everything I've done in my life up to now doesn't count. I think the best person to answer this question would be a H.R. representative; don't be afraid of hurting my feelings because I just want an honest answer. Thanks.

Its not an instant job, but try job hunting without any university degree at all and you'll find out its worth something. Let me use an even more extreme example - a high school diploma is no ticket to a great job, but it is a requirement.

You said to be blunt, so I will. If you've had 10 interviews, I'd suggest the problem is not just your resume. Its not a ton of interviews, but its not bad. I've personally been offered jobs in 1/2 to 1/3 of situations where I've gotten an interview. I realize some employers like to interview 40+ people for a position, but I wouldn't assume your resume alone is the issue.

You tell us you are 'looking' for a job. Do you know what you want to do? The problem with a polisci degree is that it doesn't really prepare you to actually _do_ anything. You might consider some more practical training to complement your degree. I wouldn't jump into university again, you'd be better off with some sort of college program that gave you more readily marketable skills. The combination of practical skills from a college WITH a university degree is much more useful then either one on its own. I know several people who picked up some college skills in say programming or business analysis after doing an english degree and they got pretty good jobs. If you do that, you'll find your university degree will be helping open doors the college on its own wouldn't.

Good luck. You need to 'keep plugging' but with focus. Simply posting your resume doesn't cut it. You need to more actively pursue network contacts or even job boards. Make sure you research companies you apply for jobs at, and make sure your cover letter is excellent and explains how your skills and interests match up with the needs of the position.

Its one of those degrees that can be used for a launch into a professional school, often law school. It might help also in getting a government job, from police work to administrative work in a regulatory agency. If you could add some accounting you might find work with the IRS or Social Security Administration. A law degree could get you work with the FBI. Anyway, good luck!

unless you plan to go to Law School, Poli Sci degrees are useless.
