Gibson guitars sound better, look better...Fenders are good but a Gibson through a Marshall amp is the ultimate noise machine! I have a Gibson SG and would never trade it for a Fender Guitar!!

They are both great.
Gibson's are more expensive to get into. They typically have shorter fretboards and use fatter strings. That said, I used very heavy strings on my first stratocaster.
I started with a stratocaster, then decided it wasn't good enough, got into other guitars. I was surprised when I went back to it to find out how robust and versatile a guitar it really was. At one point I loved Gibson's, then i loved Fender Jazzmasters, then I loved Rickenbachers(sp??). Right now if I was getting a new guitar, I'd probably go for a telecaster thinline reissue.
Don't pay attention to what looks good, or what your friends or favourite bands are using. Get into the stores, spend a lot of time, and try as many different guitars as possible. You might be surprised what you find.

gibson. fenders make me sick in the same way as mall hopping women who all have fake boobs, fake blond hair, the same clothes, fake nails and the same fake smile on their fake faces. they all look the same and they all sound the same.
